Welcome to the NEW Dogo.org PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the new Dogo.org. This site is exclusively about the Dogo Argentino canine breed. This is not a club site, or a registry. Our goal is simple; provide a single location, packed with as much information as possible about the breed from as many aspects as possible. (Hunter, Pet, Show, Service, etc.) Dogo.org hopes to provide a resource for people to learn about this breed whether they are owners, or someday wish to be. We hope to provide in depth information on health conditions which may be present in Dogos, as well as general information that would interest all dog owners. There are no discussion boards at this point, however in the future there may be.  If you would like to provide articles for the new Dogo.org site, please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dogo History PDF Print E-mail

The history of the Dogo Argentino and the two brothers who created the breed is as colorful and passionate as the history of Argentina itself. Antonio Nores Martinez was not quite 18 years old and Agustin a year younger in 1925 when Antonio first conceived of and took the first step in his vision of a large game breed created specifically for the varied and rugged Argentine countryside.

"I still remember as if it were yesterday... the day when my brother Antonio told me for the first time his idea of creating a new breed of dog for big game, for which he was going to take advantage of the extraordinary braveness of the Fighting Dog of Cordoba. Mixing them with other breeds which would give them height, a good sense of smell, speed, hunting instinct and, more than anything else deprive them of that fighting eagerness against other dogs, which made them useless for pack hunting.A mix that would turn them into sociable dogs, capable of living in freedom, in families and on estates, keeping the great courage of the primitive breed, but applied to a useful and noble end; sport hunting and vermin control."

Puppy Fade PDF Print E-mail

Dogo Puppies

If you’ve bred a few litters, you’ve no doubt seen a seemingly healthy puppy, inexplicably begin to “fade.” A normal healthy litter of pups is born to a normal healthy mother..  You watch them with great glee, as they instinctively latch on to a nipple and begin to suckle greedily.  You can relax now, right?– the pups are fine and mom is fine – the job is done. Right? Sometimes all is fine, other times, puppys may begin to “fade” over the next couple of days, one or more pups develop may the raspy sounds of inhalation pneumonia and quickly fade and die despite your best efforts.

Deafness in Dogos PDF Print E-mail

(Photo property of Mr. & Mrs. Christman)
Dogo's, like any primarily white dog, can be born partially or completely deaf. For this reason it is of utmost importance that ALL Dogos be BAER tested.

What IS BAER testing?

The BAER (Brain Auditory Evoked Response) test is a safe and painless test to determine if a dog has a hearing loss.  A BAER test is performed by inserting an earphone into the ear canal, while recording needle electrodes are inserted in the skin to record brain wave response.  Each ear is tested individually.  A series of  clicks are transmitted via the earphone to stimulate a response.  The response is detected by the needle electrodes, transmitted to the BAER device, where it is recorded. (on a monitor screen or on paper or both)  The click series generally starts at about 70 decibels and is gradually increased to 100 decibels (if hearing is not detected at the lower levels).
